Symptoms and Signs

Menopause naturally occurs in women aged between 45-55, though sometimes it can also start slightly earlier than this. The beginning of menopausal symptoms is often known as peri-menopause. The symptoms can vary and not all women feel all the symptoms, however, it is still apparent that it is a life changing event that will need extra special care and attention.

One of the first signs of menopause is a change in your monthly cycle. It can become heavier or lighter, and become more irregular as time goes on. Whilst some women may enjoy the thought of no longer having periods, amongst the symptoms are a few that we do not look forward to as they can cause much discomfort.

These symptoms include:

  • Hot flushes

  • Headaches

  • Loss of libido

  • Night sweats

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Osteoporosis

  • Vaginal dryness, pain and itching

  • Mood changes

  • Palpitations/Cardiac issues

  • Skin ageing caused by collagen levels dropping, increasing deep wrinkle formation and thinning of the skin, including loss of skin elasticity and dryness

  • Digestion problems

  • Depression and mood swings

  • Fatigue and loss of concentration

  • Weight gain

These symptoms often last for a period of 2-5 years during which time your body is accepting the fact that it will no longer be producing eggs every month. This is caused by a natural change in your body’s sex hormones and your levels of oestrogen decrease. This prevents ovulation and brings with the annoying symptoms stated above. There are however lots of coping strategies for dealing with the indicators of menopause, but it is up to you to choose the ones that work for you.

You should see a health professional so that they can advise you of any medical solutions to help you cope in the initial stages, as some women find that menopause happens quite quickly and is often unwelcome, causing them to feel stressed and run down.

The Menopause, often known as ‘the change’, can be challenging for many women.  Our site gives you a few tips on how to manage these symptoms during this period.
